New motorcycle camera mount

by Editor on 02/13/11

Over the last week I've been working on a new mounting system for the high definition video camera on the handlebars of my motorcycle. The previous bracket worked very well but in a continuing effort to get the best video results possible, I wanted to see if I could improve it.
When I found these 49mm fork clamps I realized that they would not only give me the added stability I was looking for, they would also offer a cleaner look in comparison to the aluminum angle bracket that was used previously.

I did have to make two brackets to connect the vertical supports to the clamps and that took a lot longer than I had anticipated. The goal was to make them as small as possible, yet strong enough to be problem free. I ended up using two small pieces of 1/4 inch aluminum angle, and after all the cutting, drilling, filling, sanding and polishing, they were finally completed and installed. I was able to use the same camera case platform that I made several months ago, but I did have to cut off two inches, relocate and drill new holes, then more filing, sanding, polishing, and finally put it all together and took this picture.

Custom Cycle Engineering is the manufacture of these 49mm lamp clamps and they are the best clamps I've seen. A second set was used to mount a pair of PIAA cross country H.I.D. lamps.
